These three reactions to learning disability theory are anomalous from a simple Marxist perspective. However, they are explicable with a more sophisticated Marxist approach. I have used this more sophisticated approach because I find Marxist theory attractive, even though the only Marxist approach in special education is a fairly simple one. Whether Marxism can deal with special education as a whole remains to be seen. And this uncertainty is particularly appropriate in view of my suggestion that learning disability theory is little more than the dominant classes talking to themselves. Ideology is supposed to generate a false consciousness among subordinate groups which hinders their ability to perceive their true social situation.
